I have this thing with material desire. Generally when I see something I want, it gets to me until I buy it. Its sometimes a bit of a problem, but in this case I think it’s okay.
Remember how I really wanted a spinning wheel? Well, I bought one. A hitchhiker made by The Merlin Tree.
It started because I thought, self, you should buy one of those knitting emergency bags you saw on the internets. And I did what I always do when I am going to buy something online, look for anything else that I could possibly could get from that website. And I realized she had spinning wheels. And said, oh, how I want a spinning wheel. Won’t that make me want to clean the house, because I can’t use it until I clean the house. And it’s so small! It will fit. And so, I thought about it all day, even while doing a conference call for work, and thought and thought and thought, and bought one.
Yes, I do believe I have obsession issues with material things.
But I now have myself a Hitchhiker from The Merlin Tree. I ordered it from Spunky Eclectic because I wanted one of her Emergency Knitting bags, so now I have one of those as well. I hadn’t realized that the logo is sort of an iron on transfer, not painted on, so I might try to make one for myself (possibly with a big tote bag, because I do love huge knitting bags) that’s painted on instead. I wouldn’t sell them, obviously. I do love the wheel. I haven’t been able to play with it as much as I’d like yet. I’d like to paint it as well, but I haven’t decided on a design yet. No pictures yet, because I’m lazy.
I haven’t been knitting as much as I’d like. I ended up frogging muir and haven’t restarted yet, and secret of the stole and the halloween mystery shawl are kind of on the back burner as things I don’t need to have finished yet. I have been working on a pair of socks for the husband, but I sliced open my finger last Sunday, so most of the week it hurt a bit too much to knit. Instead I pulled out the sculpey and started playing around with making tiny food. They came out pretty well, but I haven’t baked them yet. I’m going to make them in to stitch markers, possibly to sell on etsy to fuel my addictions. I bought the sculpey last winter when I was thinking about making a cake topper for the wedding, and it got put away when I ran out of time to worry about that on top of everything else. When I was younger I used to do a lot of sculpey projects, but I stopped working with it while I was in college. I forgot how fun it was. And I’m actually fairly good at it, which I had forgotten.
Knitting wise I’ve decided I’m going to put a temporary ban on buying stash yarn in 2008. I’ve been spending way too much money this year in general, and recently on knitting supplies. Since I have more than enough stash yarn for next year (and probably the year after!) and we might be moving in the next few years, I decided that it would make the most sense to say no to more stash yarn and concentrate on stash busters instead. This won’t carry over to new projects, in case I need to knit some mittens or something like that, but I’m going to try hard to limit my spending. At least until the fall fiber festivals. Plus, with the new wheel, I’d rather concentrate on fiber and spinning it. And I’m running out of storage, let’s be honest.
So now I’m getting the last few actual project related skeins of yarn for holiday knitting and some new stuff for myself, getting a few sock knitting books I’ve been eyeing, and trying to wean myself off of looking at yarn on the interwebs all day. It’s seriously addictive.
I have some posts in the works reviewing some of my recent yarn purchases and KnitPicks new Harmony needles. I’d like to post pictures of my new wheel as well, especially disassembled while I paint it. I haven’t been able to find pictures of half-painted wheels, and I’d like to document the process once I start. I think at this point it will be an after the holidays adventure.
